Copious irrigation, early tangential excision, and dressing are standard treatments for alkali burns [1]. Biobrane is a biosynthetic dressing widely used for partial-thickness burns. However, its use to treat alkali burns has rarely been discussed in the literature. A 34-year-old male suffered a partial-thickness alkali burn caused by accidental paint solvent spillage (Taxite 4000, pH 10) over his face, neck, chest, and hand (11% of total body surface area). Immediate hourly copious irrigation was commenced before a same-day operative scrubdown. After intraoperative irrigation and scrubbing with neutralizing chlorhexidine gluconate 4% liquid soap (pH 5.0–6.5), only the upper limbs were still alkaline (Fig. 1). Hence, we proceeded with ultra-thin tangential excision and debridement over the right upper limb until a litmus test indicated a neutral pH. Biobrane was applied onto the dry clot-free wound bed with sterile Hypafix (Fig. 2). The Biobrane adhered well, was sequentially trimmed, and the wound was exposed by postoperative day 12. The right arm healed by 1 month postoperatively (Fig. 3). Minimal scars were present, only on the medial portion of the right hand, at a 1-year follow-up (Fig. 4). After continuous irrigation, debridement via the

The Introduction of a Protocol for the Use of Biobrane for Facial Burns in Children
BIOBRANE HAS BECOME AN INDISPENSIBLE DRESSING WITH THREE ESTABLISHED INDICATIONS IN ACUTE BURNS CARE AT OUR INSTITUTION: (1) as the definitive dressing of superficial partial thickness facial burns, (2) after tangential excision of deep burns when autograft or cadaver skin is unavailable, and (3) for graft reduction. This paper details our initial experience of Biobrane for the management of su...
متن کاملAldehyde-treated porcine skin versus biobrane as biosynthetic skin substitutes for excised burn wounds: case series and review of the literature.
Background. The use of skin substitutes as temporary or permanent coverings has been a subject of research and study since 1500 BC. Temporary coverage of the burn wound can decrease the metabolic rate, fluid loss, pain, and colonization. The aim of this study is to review clinical experience with Biobrane and aldehyde-treated porcine skin (E.Z. Derm) as biosynthetic skin substitutes for the tre...
متن کاملThe use of Biobrane® to dress split-thickness skin graft in paediatric burns.
Biobrane(®) is commonly used in paediatric burns to cover partial thickness burns and donor sites of split thickness skin (SSG). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of Biobrane(®) in dressing SSG adjacent to skin graft donor sites or partial thickness burns. A retrospective review was undertaken to determine the use of Biobrane(®) in dressing SSG, where the grafted areas were adjac...
متن کاملA Randomized, Prospective Study of the Treatment of Superficial Partial-Thickness Burns: AWBAT-S Versus Biobrane
The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate AWBAT-S in comparison with Biobrane for the treatment of superficial partial-thickness burns using the patient as his or her own control. Primary outcome measures included length of hospital inpatient stay and patient-reported perception of pain. Secondary outcome measures included time to healing, clinical outcome of burn sites (scarring) and...
متن کاملReduced wound contraction after grafting of full-thickness burns with a collagen and chondroitin-6-sulfate (GAG) dermal skin substitute and coverage with biobrane.
Full-thickness burns destroy both the epidermal and dermal tissues of the skin. This study evaluates a collagen and chondroitin-6-sulfate dermal skin substitute (graft) that was applied to excised full-thickness burns and covered with Biobrane. Experimental conditions included: (a) no burn, subcutaneous implantation of the graft; (b) burn, excision, graft, coverage with Biobrane and bandages; (...
